The Difference Between a Draftsman and a Building Designer

It’s common for people to assume that a draftsman and a building designer offer the same service—but there are key differences.

A draftsman focuses on converting ideas into technical drawings. While they play an important role in documentation, their involvement is usually limited to what's been asked of them.

A building designer, on the other hand, brings a broader skill set. They consider aesthetics, flow, functionality, energy efficiency, and compliance right from the beginning. They can also offer design suggestions based on experience, help problem-solve awkward or constrained sites, and communicate directly with builders, engineers, and councils.

Building designers often have qualifications in architecture or design and operate under a license or registration, depending on the state. Their role is more consultative and creative than a draftsman’s, offering greater support from concept through to approval.

For anyone starting a new build, renovation, or extension, working with a building designer ensures a more considered outcome—both visually and practically.
